Though Tortoise (real name Matsumoto Atsushi) only made his solo debut in 2003, Tortoise made his major-label musical debut as the vocalist for the rock band Ulfuls, and is still active with them today. Tortoise's 2003 debut with was with a cover album of well known English language blues songs (he claims that his band mates made him release it), but he has since released original solo material and has also taken part in collaborating with other artists.
