Experiences in Japan 20 - Parts of the house
Once, I was helping Katsurou (the son of my friend Ami) to make his homework, and he told me that he needed to put the parts of the house and the names, and he began to ask me which parts should be good to put. Of course he thought of livingroom, bathroom, etc., but I told him that those were the options everybody would use, so we should look for alternative things so he could impress his teacher too... and then Ami said something very true: In other countries, the houses are too common, but in Japan, there are a lot of parts that we don't even imagine they exist (and look at the size of the houses, bloody small).
The list we made (and which I am writting after this) includes many things that are exclusively of old houses or mansions:
居間 - Ima - Living room
食堂 or 食卓 - Shokudou or Shokutaku - Dining room
寝室 - Shinshitsu - Bedroom
台所 - Daidokoro - Kitchen
トイレ or 洗面所 or 化粧室 - Toire or Senmenjo or Keshoshitsu - Toilet
Now, I'm gonna explain other zones of the house, please refer to the picture below:
1) 押入れ - Oshiire - Cupboard with sliding doors
2) 天袋 - Tenbukuro - Upper part of the "oshiire"
3) とこのま - Tokonoma - Is the space that is at the side of the "oshiire" with wooden floor (This is used generally as an ornament of the room of "tatami" and in this space you put flowers and vases, before, this used to be the sacred place of the house)
4) 上がり框 - Agarikamachi - The first step of the house
And others:
玄関 - genkan - Entrance hall
下駄箱 - Getabako - Place to put the shoes, or the drawer to put them
風呂場 - Furoba - Bathroom
The ones mentioned before, can be known by all of us, but there are other places exclusively made for mansions and residences:
車庫 - Shako - Garage
門 - Mon - Gate before the garden
庭 - Niwa - Garden
地下室 - Chikashitsu - Basement
廊下 - Rouka - Passage, corridor
ロフト - Rofuto - Loft
屋根裏 - Yaneura - Attic
裏口 - Uraguchi - Backdoor
客室 - Kyakushitsu - Guest room
隠し部屋 - Kakushibeya - Panic room (yes, they also exist in Japan)
And these ones, exist in old houses, or houses in the country:
(Look at the picture above)
5) 囲炉裏 - Irori - The little pot or oven in the floor to burn inciense
6) 縁台 - endai - the little hall that goes to the garden (I believe it's called veranda)
軒下 - Nokishita - Inside of the cornice
炊事場 - suijiba - Cooking room
流し場 - Nagashiba - Room to wash the dishes
洗濯室 - Sentakushitsu - Room to wash clothes/Laundry
Who can imagine that in such small houses like japanese homes can have so many rooms? At least, I think that the next time the teacher of Katsurou will think it twice before leaving this homework again, or he will tell his students to not ask for help again hahaha XD
